Restoran Sushi King

After our unsuccessful outdoor photoshoot, we decided to have some Japanese food, and we decided to go for Sushi King to see what exactly is the whole hype about.

This be the signboard of the restaurant. It's situated at the Ground Floor of Parkson as well, and is in the same row with Secret Recipe and Marrybrown. Sushi King, like Excapade, is something like a very first local-made Japanese restaurant that started off in KL, Malaysia and since then have spawned everywhere throughout Malaysia, even in my hometown in Sabah.

This be the interior of the restaurant. Being that I've been to plenty of local-made Japanese restaurants, this definitely looks like one of them. A bit of a fusion theme to suit its locality without having it looking too Japanese-exotic, yet still have the slight feel of a Japanese restaurant. All in all, it looks pretty good. At least they kept the tradition of having the sushi train. And while I was looking around, apparently they have a challenge in which you can eat for free if you can finish 5 bowls of ramen within 10 minutes. Awesome challenge! I wouldn't mind doing it if I weren't on a diet...

This be the menu. Surprisingly thin, with not as much choices as Excapade did. Hell, not even as much as Misato or Kitaro did. Though I do commend on their separate menu of their set meals. It looks pretty creative, almost fusion even, and it came with ice cream!

It seems that aside from their wasabi case, all the other stuff, even the soy sauce bottle, bear their brand. LOL! Talk about narcissism! XD I like the design though. A fish with a red crown. Very cute ^_^

Salmon shake, which tastes a-OK. The only beef I have is that the rice they used was not exactly the proper rice because it's quite brittle and doesn't hold, and doesn't stick on the salmon and keeps falling off. Either that, or they didn't use enough vinegar to hold it

Smoked salmon, which tastes pretty good too. Same case with the rice though

My hubby ordered teriyaki chickin udon (I think). Another beef about their noodles is that it is really sticky, like they used too much starch to make this noodles. But I gotta give it to them: the soup is very flavourful

Octopus balls. This was my first time eating it, and to be honest, it tastes a bit like cucur or something with texture and taste. But it's good. Crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside

Fried crispy squid. Nice and crunchy, though best when dipped into wasabi and sauce. My hubby claimed that it tastes almost like the ones that his mother makes. I wouldn't know. I don't even remember the last time I ate it XD

I ordered one of their set menu to give it a try, and also because I had a craving for mi sua this afternoon but never got to eat it, so got this to satisfy my craving. As usual, the mi sua is really sticky, like they use a LOT of starch for it. The sushi, again, the rice problem, though the tempura tastes pretty good, and their egg pudding didn't disappoint. Their ice cream sorta melted a little too fast though, or I would've enjoyed it more, but then again, who can fight the laws of physics, eh?

Close up shots of the main food

Our salmon sashimi seemed to have been forgotten, so thank goodness my hubby reminded them. It's cut to the nice and right thick proportions, but it just doesn't really truly have the fresh, juicy taste of it, and we were laughing in disbelief as we realized we waited so long for them to cut up this little much of sashimi

Overall, I would rate it a 4.5/10. Not as impressive as I had hoped it would. Maybe after branching out so much, the quality soon deteriorated and it just didn't seem to retain its authenticity any longer. In fact, I heard tales of the open-counter chef eating their products while making sushi for people, which, though hilarious, was just seriously not ethical. XD

You can go and give it a shot if you want to try a Malaysian-made Japanese restaurant (which surprisingly has so many people despite its unsatisfying quality), but don't keep your hopes up on it
