Hua Leong

We went down to Miri for a weekend overnight getaway, and of course, we needed to settle our dinner come nightfall. My dad in law wanted to try one of his favourite haunts, so we decided to go there, which is slightly nearby our hotel, called Hua Leong.

Location: Just across the street and a few blocks down from Gloria Hotel, same row with the neighbourhood supermarket

Setting: Typical kopitiam style with outdoor and indoor dining, but outdoor being more prominent

I'm not exactly sure how the menu system is, but what I understand from my dad in law, they serve Western food at night, and it's one of those budget kind. He highly recommended the mixed grill, so we all ordered mixed grill just to try it out.

The mixed grill contains french fries, fried fish, chicken chop, lamb chop, baked beans, sausage and coleslaw. While the presentation is not as good as it should for a Western food, it's pretty fancy-shmancy for kopitiam standards. And while it doesn't have the awesome Western taste, I can't fault it too much either. It's almost like a pretty nice blend between Western and Asian cooking. So yeah, pretty well done for kopitiam standards.

Good Taste Bah Kut Teh Restaurant

Went down to Miri for a routine dentist appointment, and before we do, we had lunch, and we just randomly picked this place called Good Taste Bah Kut Teh Restaurant

Location: Around the Boulevard area, not sure near where

Setting: Typical Chinese kopitiam store

It was a pretty decent meal more or less. It's not as good as some bah kut teh I eaten, but it's more or less standard tasty stuff. Could've have more spare parts though, but I do love the bean sprouts. Mmm~

QQ Roasted Duck Specialist

Went to Miri last weekend and all the eateries we went to were familiar ones, until finally at dinner time, we're going to some place new, which they rave have the best duck in the house: QQ Roasted Duck Specialist (at least that's what they call it)

Location: Just across the street from Gloria Hotel downtown just after a right junction from Parkson (I think)

Setting: Typical Chinese kopitiam style kind of setting
Atmosphere: 6.5/10 (pretty good, though it's pretty much past dinner time prolly, so not much patronage)
Design: 6.5/10 (also pretty old-school design for a typical Chinese kopitiam)

Roasted duck and char sau sau rou

The food tastes pretty good actually. Nice and filling and all-round flavourful. Overall, I'd give it a 7/10 for it. To be honest, I wouldn't say this is the best duck I've ever eaten, but they did a pretty good job nonetheless. So I would recommend this place to have your meals

Garden Cafe

Going down to KK again for an early Chinese New Year celebration, since my in-laws are unable to get a work leave for the actual CNY, and we wanted to see my eldest bro-in-law's bro's newborn kid. So as usual, road trip again~!

Of course, our brunch place before we take on the super long road was at Garden Cafe. I didn't manage to make a piece the last time coz I was so damn sleepy, but now I finally manage to get it

Location: Wisma Limbang, Ground Floor, Limbang area, which is within the Sarawak border

Setting: Typical kopitiam setting style, which is a little odd as it's built within a supermarket. You usually see this in food court area, not alone within the supermarket area
Atmosphere: 8.5/10 (very good atmosphere and a very large patronage, making me wonder how much do these people earn a day)
Design: 7.5/10 (very true to a kopitiam design with nice motivational posters and stuff, but too bad the size is just too small)

Drinks: Lemon tea (my hubby), Coffee-O (my dad in law), Tea-C (my mom in law) and Milo (mine)
Presentation: 5/10 for all (typical kopitiam style serving)
Taste: 6/10 (for mine at least, the taste and sweetness just right)

Food: Kolo mee (my hubby and mom in law), wa tan ho (my dad in law) and fish ball tang hoon (glass noodle; mine)
Presentation: 7.5/10 for all (may look simple and clean, but it has an appetizing look that makes you just wanna sink your teeth into it)
Taste: I'm not sure how the others taste (my dad in law's wa tan ho looks amazingly delicious though) but mine I would give a 8/10. It's amazing that the taste is just so yummy, warm and just the right flavour that I can't stop stuffing myself. And best of all, it's the perfect food for me to eat without ending up throwing it up due to car sickness coz by the time we're on the road, it would've been digested already LOL

There, finally, the piece on Garden Cafe. But it will prolly be quite a long while before we can come back here again, maybe on our next trip to KK

Jing Wood Cafe

My hubby and I went back to Miri to finish what we have left off from our wedding photo shoot, and after a bit of a long day, we decided to have dinner somewhere nearby, so we went off to eat at Jing Wood Cafe.

We came in from the other side because it wasn't easy to secure a good parking, but as you can see, the restaurant seating leads all the way here


This be the kitchen/interior area of the restaurant. Looks just like any other Chinese restaurant, instead there is no room for the guests to eat indoors. Mostly outdoor dining, I suppose

This be the signboard of the restaurant. It's located somewhere near the early parts of town, nearby where the famous Pelita and 2020 Cafe is. It used ot be called Kingwood back then, but dunno why they decided to change the name into Jing Wood instead

This be our drinks: 100Plus and ice lemon. Dunno what possessed me to drink something cold when it tends to freeze like hell in Miri once it's night time, but I drank it anyways

This be my food, which is Penang fried kuay teow with clams. Turns out that we came at the wrong time since the usual Chinese food stalls were closed and night time is where they specialize on Western cuisines. My hubby couldn't get a decent light Chinese meal as he had made his order twice but they still never came and didn't bother to give an explanation. We had to leave with him hungry and angry and ended up ordering takeout from McDonald's. Poor hubby of mine

Well, I can't say whether or not it's recommendable to eat in this cafe, because I have had a bit of a satisfying meal both in the past and now. But all I can say is come at the right time if you feel like eating a certain meal.
